Fish Fry Fridays: Familiar Faces, Food and Fun

There’s something about Friday nights during Lent that just feels right.

Parking lots fill up. The smell of fried fish drifts through the air. Folks you haven’t seen in a while suddenly appear—smiling, hungry, and ready to catch up. And behind it all, you’ll find the same group of men moving steady and strong in the background… the Knights.

Not just at one parish—but all across the country—cooking, serving, cleaning, organizing. Working long hours. Taking in a good bit of money. And then handing every penny of it away to help their parish and their community.

No spotlight. No applause line. Just quiet, faithful work.

Heroes, plain and simple.

Two Fish Fries But One Faith And Spirit

Over the last couple of Fridays, I had the privilege of being part of two of these fish fries—one at my home parish, and another at a nearby parish filled with old friends (the kind you can pick up with like no time has passed… even if it has).

And somewhere between the hushpuppies and the laughter, something unexpected happened…

Out came the sketch pad.

A few caricatures turned into a few more… and then a few more after that. Before long, we had a whole stack of faces—each one with a story behind it.

Some of those stories were told out loud.
Some were understood without saying a word.
And some… well, if you weren’t there, you might not catch the joke—but you’ll still feel it.

Because that’s what caricature does.

It doesn’t just draw a face.
It draws a life—just enough to make you smile, maybe laugh, and maybe recognize something deeper.

A Gallery of Good People

These aren’t celebrities.
They’re better than that.

They’re the guys frying fish.
Taking tickets.
Washing pans.
Telling stories.
Serving everyone else first.

Each caricature you’ll see in this gallery is a small tribute to a big life.

(And yes… a few of them might look just a little funnier than they remember.)

Our Story

Here’s the thing…

Caricature has a funny way of reminding us that life itself is a story.

Not a perfect one.
Not always neat and tidy.
But real.

And one day, every one of us is going to tell that story—standing before God.

“This is what I did.”
“This is what I tried to do.”
“This is where I fell short.”
“And this… this is where I got it right.”

And then He’ll tell it back to us.

Only better.

Because where we tend to remember the rough edges…
He remembers the grace.

So these drawings?
They’re simple.
They’re fun.
They’re a little exaggerated (on purpose, of course).

But they’re also something more.

They’re snapshots of lives being lived well—serving others, building community, and doing it all with a smile and a plate of fish in hand.

And that’s a story worth telling.

That’s our story.

And we’re sticking to it.
