Georgetown Harborwalk: Faith, Rivers, and Reflection Along South Carolina’s Sacred Waters
Discover the Georgetown Harborwalk beside South Carolina’s Sampit River—rich in lore, Catholic heritage, Gullah-Geechee history, river beauty, and reflection.
Opa

Some places don’t just invite you to visit… they call you to go for a walk. The Georgetown Harborwalk—right here in the Diocese of Charleston—is one of those places.
A Two Hour Pilgrimage Awaits …
This peaceful boardwalk follows the Sampit River’s edge, where shrimp boats rest, the breeze carries stories, and time politely slows down. The Sampit River flows right past the Harborwalk and then empties into the Winyah Bay. And like so many other treasures in the Palmetto State and the Diocese of Charleston, be patient—there’s more to this story. From the Winyah Bay, these waters connect with the larger Pee Dee River before finally reaching the Atlantic.
And for our brothers and sisters in the Diocese of Charleston, it’s just a short walk from this mythical place to Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, quietly anchoring the 2,000 year old faith right there in the heart of this historic waterfront town.
The Palmetto Silhouette …
The Palmetto Silhouette you see above was carefully crafted by Opa. It is a simple by design by most standards—using only black and white, which is light and darkness, to tell an eternal story. It leaves much room for reflection, of course, drawing your eyes down the boardwalk to whatever is at the other end.
Step by step, Opa’s story from Georgetown is much like the Holy Highway spoken of in Isaiah 35:8. It calls the faithful to continue moving forward with purpose and promise as the Sampit River, all the while, whispers a tale of assurance to anyone willing to walk this walk at the river’s edge. And finally, there is the looming palmetto (yes, that tree…) standing guard at the entrance, reminding viewers of the Tree of Life. It is a strong tree, deeply rooted, steady, and ever present in the trek down the boardwalk.
And yes… there’s joy here too. 🌞
• Beautiful weather most of the year
• A living river environment
• Outstanding restaurants and riverfront dining
• Charming shops and treasures throughout historic downtown Georgetown
Faith, beauty, history, and hospitality—all meeting along the boards.
Our Story …
Take the walk. Contemplate the light. And let the river do what rivers have always done. That’s our story, and we’re sticking to it.
