It’s Time To Plan Our Next Carolina Pilgrimage
How We Plan A One-Day Pilgrimage
At Catholic Roads, it’s time to plan a Carolina Pilgrimage for June (2026). What’s in the process? How do we do it? Let’s first highlight what we DON”T DO.
No giant cross-country expeditions.
No expensive overseas tours.
Just meaningful one-day (and sometimes—two days) journeys across the Carolinas built around three simple ideas:
Shrines! Wines! Interesting People.
But I Don’t Know Anything About Those Things!
Now before anybody gets nervous, let us explain.
The shrines are the churches we visit.
The wines represent the flavor of the region—the restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, vineyards, historic districts, local culture, and small-town treasures that make a place memorable.
And the interesting people?
Well… God usually takes care of that part Himself. And that’s the beauty of a Carolina Pilgrimage.
You don’t have to go far—and you don’t just go somewhere. You go looking.
When you travel with open eyes… a peaceful spirit… and enough time to slow down a little, you almost always come home with more than you expected.
Planning the June 2026 Carolina Pilgrimage
For our next Carolina Pilgrimage, we’re looking for a destination within about 90 minutes or so of the South Carolina Midlands. We live in the Midlands.
That’s—close enough for a relaxed weekday journey.
And—far enough away to feel like we truly stepped outside of everyday life for a little while.
The first thing we search for is always the same: THE SHRINE. That would be a beautiful Catholic church where a person (pilgrim) can:
pray quietly before the Holy Tabernacle.
spend time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
possibly attend daily/weekday Mass.
and simply rest for a while in a sacred space.
That selected church becomes the “shrine” for our little pilgrimage. No, it’s not necessarily a shrine in the official “church-sense”… but a holy, stopping place where Christ awaits expectant travelers.
And honestly, that “shrine-for-a-day” changes the whole day!
The roads feel different.
The conversations feel different.
Even lunch somehow tastes better afterward.
Especially if somebody nearby knows how to smoke barbecue properly—and if you’re in the Carolinas, that’s definitely NOT an unrealistic expectation!
The Shrine Always Comes First
When planning a Carolina Pilgrimage, the church is always the center of the day.
We ask questions like:
Where is this parish church?
Is it beautiful? Historic?
Does it have a welcoming atmosphere?
Is there weekday / daily Mass scheduled?
Is there Eucharistic adoration?
Is it located near places worthy of the title of local “wines”?
Some churches immediately pull you in.
Maybe it’s:
the priest.
or the stained glass.
the architecture.
the quietness of the sanctuary.
the flickering candles.
the prayer garden or columbarium.
or simply the feeling that generations of believers have prayed here before you.
Those things matter.
Because pilgrimage should never feel rushed. It should feel set apart.
Then Come the Wines
Now we explore the “wines.” And no, that doesn’t really mean vineyards (though it is possible).
The wines are the flavor of the journey itself. They are the things that give a place its personality:
old downtown districts
local seafood restaurants
bookstores
antique shops
bakeries
coffee houses
museums
riverwalks
farmers markets
hidden diners
roadside produce stands
barbecue smoke floating across a parking lot
and conversations happening on front porches and sidewalks
The wines are what make the pilgrimage feel connected to the people and culture of the Carolinas.
Because Carolina Pilgrimages are not only about reaching a destination. They’re about learning to slow down, if even just for one day. And notice beauty again too. Our God is beautiful!
Then God Sends the Interesting People
This part happens almost every time.
You meet people you never planned to meet... a waitress... a friendly member of the parish... a retired seaman or fisherman… a local historian... a priest with a great story (like winning a big-money poker tournament as a priest—no kidding)… a Mennonite bakery owner… a veteran sitting quietly on a bench outside the church... or maybe just some fellow named Bubba who lives to tell stories that ALMOST sound true.
You can’t schedule those encounters... they just happen when you’re a pilgrim in the Carolinas.
And many times, those moments become the real, treasured memory of that pilgrimage.
So How Do We Choose the Next Pilgrimage?
First, we pray. I (Opa) just finished praying the Rosary in our garden and pasture. And right now, we’re searching for a South Carolina town that we don’t go to very often. One that gives us:
a Catholic Church
opportunities for prayer and Mass
interesting nearby places
a town with some local culture
good food (that’s a big one for most pilgrims we know)
peaceful scenery
and room for unexpected encounters
That could mean:
a coastal town
a mountain community
a small city on a river
a town with a railroad history
a town with an unusual or interesting name
a historic district
or even a place we’ve passed through a hundred times without ever truly exploring.
That’s one of the great lessons of pilgrimage: You don’t always have to travel far to discover something meaningful.
Sometimes you just need:
a free day
a full tank of gas
a comfortable pair of shoes
a prayerful spirit
and enough curiosity to turn down a different road
Why Carolina Pilgrimages Matter
Life moves fast these days—too fast! People are overwhelmed, distracted, exhausted, and constantly connected to noise.
Pilgrimage helps interrupt those things. And CAROLINA PILGRIMAGES are… easy to plan… inexpensive to go on… and a memorable experience too.
Carolina Pilgrimages give the pilgrim time to:
slow down
pray
notice beauty
reconnect with gratitude
and rediscover the presence of God in ordinary places
And that’s why one-day pilgrimages work so well.
They’re simple… accessible to lots of people… affordable… and you don’t need an airline ticket, a passport, or two weeks off from work either.
Sometimes all you need is one day, intentionally centered around faith, wonder, fellowship, and discovery.
And here in the Carolinas there are beautiful roads leading in every direction.
Come Along for the Journey
As we prepare for our June 2026 Carolina Pilgrimage, we invite you to follow us and begin to think differently about travel.
Not every road trip has to become a vacation… some journeys can become pilgrimages… and some of the holiest discoveries happen just a few hours from home.
And if you’re not near the Carolinas, don’t worry! Go on a Pennsylvania Pilgrimage, a Kentucky Pilgrimage, or an Oregon Pilgrimage. God is everywhere, and so are Catholic Churches, good food, history and culture, and interesting people. Let “CAROLINA PILGRIMAGE” become a generic word and an invitation for you to experience quick, intimate get-aways for you, your family and friends—with our amazing God!
Come, Holy Spirit! Thank you, Jesus!
