“Caricature Party” Brings Extra Joy and Evangelization to Religious Sisters’ Retreat in Columbia, SC
Columbia, South Carolina — November 15, 2020 — The Minor Basilica of St. Peter, in Columbia, will be the host for a special “Nuns’ Retreat” for Religious Sisters. The focus is on spiritual reflection with joyful artistic expression when sharing the Gospel. The event, which runs from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., will be led by Sr. Margaret Kerry, FSP, a member of the Daughters of St. Paul, an international congregation devoted to using modern media as a means of evangelization, formation, and discipleship.
A Closer Look At Media In Evangelization, Catechesis, and Discipleship
This year’s retreat theme — “Using Media to Reach the World with the Gospel” — highlights the Pauline charism of spreading Christ’s message through every form of communication. Sr. Margaret, a seasoned media evangelizer and retreat leader, will guide participants in exploring how storytelling, art, and digital platforms can become pathways of grace in today’s media-saturated culture.
Special Treat for the “Retreaters”
Adding a uniquely joyful twist to the day, E.B. and Opa, a husband-and-wife caricature team and members of the Association of Pauline Cooperators (APC), will be on site creating personalized caricatures and cartoon art for the sisters in attendance. Known for their warm humor and gentle approach to evangelization through cartoon art, E.B. and Opa describe their work as “drawing people to draw people to Christ.”
“We believe joy is a form of witness,” says Opa. “Every smile we draw reflects the joy of the Gospel — and that’s what this retreat is all about.”
The Using Media to Reach the World with the Gospel retreat invites all the “sisters” (nuns) in South Carolina to experience media not merely as a tool, but also as a key part of the ministry — a way of sharing the love of Christ through creative expression, digital storytelling, and yes, even cartoons!
