Let’s Put the HOLY Back in Halloween!

Ghosts, Goblins, Saints, Souls—and a Little Catholic Mousey Toon Mischief!

Halloween! The pumpkins are appearing, the leaves are changing, the air is getting cooler, and somewhere out there, a perfectly sensible adult is spending a small fortune on candy for children dressed like ghosts, goblins, and superheroes.

It’s a wonderful time of year! But for Catholics, there’s something much bigger going on behind all those costumes and jack-o’-lanterns.

Halloween has a holy side—a very, very holy side!

And here at Catholic Roads, we’re getting ready to explore it—with a little prayer, a little penance, some heavenly humor, and Opa’s delightfully ridiculous Mousey Toons!

Three Days. One Beautiful Catholic Story.

Halloween takes its name from All Hallows’ Eve—the evening before All Saints’ Day. And it opens the door to three remarkable days in the Catholic calendar.

October 31 — All Hallows’ Eve

The eve of a great celebration of holiness—it’s been going on for countless centuries and began long before the mass media merchants created the advertising you see today! It is a reminder that we’re all called to become saints… that death doesn’t have the final word.. and that heaven really is the true destination for those who trust the mighty work of God in Jesus Christ and the cross.

November 1 — All Saints’ Day

Now we’re talking about a heavenly celebration!

We honor all the saints—the famous saints, the forgotten saints, and the huge number of holy men and women whose names we may never know until we meet them in heaven someday ourselves.

This truly is the Church Triumphant! And it is what we celebrate each year on November 1.

November 2 — All Souls’ Day

Here’s where love reaches beyond the grave.

We remember and pray for the faithful departed, especially those undergoing purification in Purgatory—the Church Suffering. The Bible tells us that nothing or no one unclean (saved yes—but perhaps not entirely holy at the time of death) will ever enter heaven (Revelation 21:27) but that we should take heart! Because the Bible also tells us that He who began a good work in us (that would be God, of course) here on earth will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6).

These souls are destined for heaven, and our prayers can help them along the last steps of their amazing journey.

Together, these days remind us of something extraordinary: the Communion of Saints!

The Church on earth… The saved souls being purified… And the saints in heaven… They’re all united in Christ. And death cannot destroy that communion of love.

Wait! What About the Ghosts and Goblins?

Well, we’re certainly not suggesting that every pumpkin, costume, or bag of candy has some ancient Catholic meaning! Cultural Halloween traditions developed through a mixture of Christian customs and other cultural influences over many centuries.

But the Catholic spiritual meaning of these days is something worth rediscovering—and remembering!

And Purgatory? It’s not Hell, and it’s not a second chance after death. It’s God’s merciful purification of souls who die in His friendship but aren’t yet quite prepared for the fullness of heaven.

That’s why Catholics pray for the dead, offer Masses for departed loved ones, and make personal sacrifices on their behalf.

It’s love in action—even beyond the grave!

Here Come Opa’s Mousey Toons!

Now, you didn’t really think Opa could talk about Halloween, saints, souls, angels, and Purgatory without finding something funny along the way, did you?

Over the coming days, Catholic Roads will be sharing a special collection of Halloween-themed Catholic Mousey Toons—those wonderfully wobbly, intentionally clumsy cartoons that find humor in our very human attempts to understand the mysteries of faith.

We’ll explore everything from All Saints’ celebrations and prayers for the holy souls to penance, guardian angels, cemetery visits, and the occasional Catholic who might be just a little too attached to his or her Halloween candy.

We’ll laugh at ourselves, of course. But never at the sacred truths of our faith.

And along the way, we just might discover that Halloween is a wonderful opportunity to talk about Jesus, eternal life, and the extraordinary love of God.

Come Along for a Hooooooly Halloween!

So stick around! Visit CatholicRoads.com regularly, and our Facebook page too, throughout the Halloween season for our special series of Catholic Mousey Toons.

Share your favorites with friends, family, fellow parishioners, and maybe even someone who hasn’t darkened the doorway of a Catholic church in years.

Who knows? A funny little cartoon might open the door to a conversation about something eternal.

The saints are celebrating. The holy souls are counting on our prayers. And the rest of us are still trying to figure out who ate all the Halloween candy!

Happy Hooooooly Halloween!

It’s Cool2B Catholic! Catholic Cool!!!

Vivat Jesus!
